Book Review: The Noble Servant

Magdalen’s stroke of luck turns into a curse. Her engagement to the Duke of Wolfberg, who she barely knows, will save her subjects from starvation, but her journey to his castle is interrupted by a mysterious plan to steal her place. By the edge of a knife, Magdalen is forced to switch places with her uneducated handmaid. Upon the company’s arrival, they make Magdalen the castle’s goose girl, which consists the menial task of watching semi-evil geese. At every turn, the geese seem to mock her.
A strange shepherd boy, who seems to know a lot about the duke, helps her in her new daily tasks and shows her unusual kindness. Together they must find a way to warn the duke of this switch forged in treachery and put Magdalen back in her rightful place, that is if she still wants it.

Melanie Dickerson does it again with her fairytale retelling of The Goose Girl! The longing, romance, and plot twists filling this book will leave you wanting more. Magdalen’s determined attitude and cunningness drove her past her grief and reminds us that even if we are dealt a bad hand, God can still use us. Forgiveness and sacrifice proved noble themes throughout this tale.
